Seoul, Oct 16 – Google’s YouTube stopped working for many South Korean users early Thursday, but the problem was largely fixed by around 9:30 a.m. The glitch hit the mobile app and desktop sites, and even disabled playback on YouTube Music. According to Yonhap news, some users reported that ads appeared and then the screen went dark, while others saw no video at all.
The outage was part of a wider global service failure that lasted from about 8:17 a.m. to 9:10 a.m. It affected users in the US, Europe and across the world, not just in South Korea. Google confirmed that the issue had been resolved on all YouTube platforms and thanked users for their patience.
The South Korean Ministry of Science and ICT said that Google Korea filed its report to the government at 9:01 a.m. That time was 10 minutes after the outage began, which is beyond the 10‑minute reporting window required for major broadcasting and telecom operators. In March 2022, after a fire at the Kakao data center, the government re‑classified Google and six other large platforms as major telecom operators, making them part of the country’s disaster‑management system.
Fans of the world’s biggest video platform can now enjoy uninterrupted streaming on smartphones, tablets and computers. For Google, the quick fix highlights the company’s global service reach, while the incident reminds regulators of the need for timely reporting during outages.
