In Mumbai on Oct 16, film director and actor Anurag Kashyap updated his Instagram bio, hinting at his frustration with recent setbacks. “The time has gone, the film too came and went. I’m on the same path as well,” he wrote, reflecting his disappointment after a string of under‑performing projects.
Kashyap, who first made waves with Black Friday, Paanch, and the cult‑classic Gangs of Wasseypur, has struggled to deliver a commercial hit since Manmarziyaan in 2017 and the cult‐favorite Ugly in 2018. His latest film, Nishaanchi, also failed to make an impact at the box office. A highly‑anticipated thriller called Kennedy remains unreleased, echoing the fate of his debut Paanch, which never saw a theatrical run.
The director’s career has also been marred by controversy. Earlier this year, Kashyap sparked outrage when he made a crude remark criticizing the Brahmin community while defending his biopic Phule. Many called the comment casteist, leading to online backlash, calls for legal action, and a formal FIR filed in Jaipur for abusive language. His daughter, Aaliyah, and other family members received threats of rape and death.
In response, Kashyap apologized on Instagram. “I forgot my limits while answering someone in anger,” he wrote. “By speaking like this, I hurt the Brahmin community—people who have played a big part in my life—and I also caused pain to my family and respected intellectuals.” He added, “I sincerely apologise to the community. I’ll manage my anger better and choose my words more carefully in the future. I hope you can forgive me.”
The Mumbai filmmaker’s recent events have underscored the challenges he faces in balancing his creative vision with the scrutiny that comes with public life. As he continues to navigate the demands of Bollywood, his next project may provide a fresh chance for redemption—and a reminder of the power of careful communication.
