‘I nominate Mamata for next Nobel Prize in Geography and Botany,’ taunts Suvendu Adhikari

Kolkata – West Bengal’s political debate is heating up as opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari laughed at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s plan to plant mangrove saplings on the hills that have been hit by floods and landslides.

During a meeting in Darjeeling, where the CM was speaking about the region’s recent disasters, she suggested that mangroves could protect the hills from future flooding.

Adhikari posted a snarky comment on social media, calling Banerjee a “future Nobel Prize winner” for her “game‑changing idea – mangroves in the mountains.” He pointed out that mangroves are salt‑tolerant trees that normally grow in coastal, brackish water. “Those forests serve as a living defence system for coastlines,” he said, noting their role in habitat creation and climate‑change mitigation. “But the hills aren’t a suitable environment for them.”

He warned that the state’s water‑management plans should not rely on mangroves. “West Bengal is becoming a joke across the country because of this nonsense,” he added, urging people to wait for a more realistic solution.

In the same meeting, Banerjee blamed the Damodar Valley Corporation for the floods. She urged the central agency to either dredge rivers regularly or dismantle its dams. “You can’t play with nature,” she said. “Let the river flow its own way or fix the problem with dredging or dam removal.”

The debate highlights the urgent need for effective flood‑control measures in North Bengal’s hills, Terai, and Dooars regions.
