‘India’s energy procurement policy is independent and sovereign’: BJP hits back at Rahul Gandhi

The BJP has fired back at Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha after the congress leader slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for being “frightened” of U.S. President Donald Trump.
BJP National Spokesperson Tuhin Sinha said Gandhi’s comments show a limited grasp of foreign policy. “India buys oil from many countries. Our energy policy stays independent and serves national interests,” he told .

Sinha rebuked Gandhi for repeatedly bringing up past cease‑fire talks, saying the DGMO and Modi have already addressed the issue. He added that Congress must explain why it did nothing against Pakistan’s terrorist threats between 2004 and 2008.

Earlier, Rahul Gandhi posted on social media that Modi had promised Trump India would stop buying Russian oil. He also suggested Congress should study the record of the United Progressive Alliance while it governed.

Congress has defended Gandhi’s stance, calling Modi “cowardly.” Senior leader Udit Raj said Modi flees whenever a powerful country threatens him—China, the U.S., Russia—and that Trump has threatened countries to buy oil. Raj pointed out that Trump has announced more than 40 cease‑fire deals, yet Modi remains silent.

Congress MP Tariq Anwar warned that India must back down under external pressure. “Our nation stays non‑aligned and decides on its own interests. Foreign interference in our affairs is wrong,” he said.

The Indian government has yet to respond to Trump’s latest remarks. Trump recently described Modi as a “great man” and said he is open to meeting the Indian leader at the upcoming ASEAN Summit in Malaysia. Trump also claimed he convinced India not to purchase Russian oil and noted it “can’t be done immediately.”

This exchange highlights the sharp divisions between the BJP and Congress over India’s foreign policy, energy strategy, and the role of external powers—key topics that will draw close attention in the coming months.
