‘Opposition wants SSR of electoral rolls’: Maha CEO conveys to ECI

The office of Maharashtra’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) told the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday that opposition parties want a Special Summary Revision (SSR) of the voter rolls.

A senior CEO official said the request – to review and publish a new draft of the electoral list – has been sent to the ECI. SSR is usually done before elections to keep the rolls clean, add voters who just turned 18, move people who have changed constituency, and delete duplicates or deceased names.

The call comes after a two‑day meeting on Tuesday where Maharashtra opposition leaders asked the CEO, S Chockalingam, and the State Election Commissioner (SEC), Dinesh Waghmare, why a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) was being pushed before local body polls. The SEC had already told the ECI on September 9 that SIR could not happen because local elections were coming up.

According to the SEC’s latest letter, Maharashtra is busy finishing elections in 29 municipal corporations, all 247 municipal councils, 42 of 147 Nagar Panchayats, 32 of 34 Zilla Parishads, and 336 of 351 Panchayat Samitis before the end of January, following a Supreme Court deadline. The SEC has asked the ECI to delay SIR until those local elections are over.

After their meeting with the CEO and SEC, opposition leaders urged a correction of voter‑list errors before the local body elections. Now their demand for an SSR has been formally communicated to the ECI.
