In Assam, security forces stopped a rhino poaching raid in Kaziranga National Park on Thursday, arresting three armed poachers.
The joint operation, led by the Biswanath Police and joined by Majuli and Lakhimpur Police, was headed by two senior officers—ASPs for crime in Biswanath and HQ.
The suspects, identified as Muhikanta Pegu (age 4), Manuj Pathari (38) and Kiran Pegu (41), were taken into custody at a home in New Dandi village, Biswanath district. Police seized a 0.303 rifle and nine 70‑mm 12‑bore cartridges from the residence of Debajit Pegu, who is now suspected of fleeing the area.
The case is now under investigation by ASP (Crime) Biswanath.
Earlier, on October 15, a forest guard in the park engaged armed poachers, resulting in one suspect’s death. Intelligence had flagged a moving group of poachers, prompting a rapid raid on an entry route in Maite Tapu. The poacher was shot in a brief clash, and a 0.303 rifle and a handbag were recovered. Search teams are still combing the area for the escapee.
Kaziranga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, remains a top spot for rhino conservation and faces ongoing threats from illegal hunting. The park’s anti‑poaching teams continue to monitor and secure all pathways to protect wildlife.
