Ed Sheeran, the Grammy‑winning singer‑songwriter, has teamed up with a star‑studded lineup of Indian musicians to create his new album “Play.” The London‑born pop star said the project was a “fun experience” and a chance to showcase the diverse music and cultures he has encountered on tours over the past decade.
In a heartfelt post on social media, Sheeran talked about the joy of working in India. “Making and finishing Play in India was such a fun experience. Over the last decade touring and meeting local artists introduced me to all types of music and cultures,” he wrote. He added, “I wanted to represent as much as I could on this EP.”
The singer spoke about the track “Symmetry” with Punjabi rapper Karan Aujla. “Karan is culture, and I love the movement he’s creating with Ikky right now. It’s been great watching what he’s built and becoming part of that journey,” Sheeran said. He also noted that Aujla taught him Punjabi verses in the studio, and they shot a vibrant music video for the song.
Sheeran praised South‑Indian talents on the track “Don’t Look Down.” The song features rapper Hanumankind, composer Santhosh Narayanan and the powerful vocalist Dhee. “I love HMK, and met him at Coachella. The energy was electric,” Sheeran said. He highlighted Santhosh’s reputation as a top film composer and praised Dhee’s voice. “We wanted to bring the Tamil language and South‑India’s sound to this EP, and they did an amazing job.”
The hit “Sapphire” with Bollywood superstar Arijit Singh reminded Sheeran of a favorite memory. “Going to Jiaganj with my dad to record with Arijit is one of my favorite moments,” he shared.
Finally, he announced his first Hindi single, “Heaven,” featuring Pakistani singer Jonita Gandhi. “I met Jonita in 2024 in Mumbai and loved her voice. This is our first Hindi song together, and I’m honored to do it with her,” she said.
Ed Sheeran’s “Play” blends Western pop with Indian beats and languages—Punjabi, Tamil and Hindi—creating a cross‑cultural hit that reflects his love of music from around the world.
