Indian Railways is gearing up for a busy festive season.
The Railway Ministry announced that the country’s rail network will run nearly 8 000 extra special trains over the next few days to help passengers travel safely for Diwali and Chhath.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw visited the Railway Board’s War Room to check on the movement of millions of travellers. He praised staff for working round the clock and wished everyone a joyous Diwali.
Across India, the railways will run 12 011 special trains during the Diwali and Chhath period—up from 7 724 last year. So far, from 1 st to 19 th October, 3 960 such trains are already on the tracks, hauling more than one crore passengers.
The biggest contributors are Northern Railway with 1 919 trains, Central Railway 1 998 and Western Railway 1 501. East Central Railway and North Western Railway each operate 1 217 extra services.
To keep travel smooth, stations are adding extra ticket counters, dedicated waiting areas, clean washrooms, and plenty of drinking water. In the Delhi region—covering New Delhi, Delhi, Anand Vihar, Hazrat Nizam uddin and Shakur Basti—15 17 000 people travelled between 16th and 19th October, a jump of 151 000 over the same period last year.
The Railway Minister also stopped by New Delhi and Anand Vihar stations to speak to passengers and gather feedback on the new arrangements. With these steps, Indian Railways aims to keep trains full, safe, and comfortable during the festive rush.
