On Thursday in Kohima, Nagaland’s Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio was chosen as the new president of the Naga People’s Front (NPF) after the party merged with its ally, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP). The vote took place during the NPF’s General Convention, which also marked the party’s 63rd foundation day.
Rio, 74, was elected unanimously as the NPF’s legislature‑party leader in the same meeting. He said the merger was more than a structural change; it reflected a shared vision and a joint effort to build a stronger political future for Nagaland and the wider Naga region.
“This is a historic and unprecedented union,” Rio told the crowd. He thanked former NDPP chief Chingwang Konyak and outgoing NPF president Apong Pongener for making the integration smooth. He also stressed that the united party will focus on resolving Naga political issues, promoting inclusive development, and meeting the aspirations of young voters.
The merger was announced on Oct 18, when the NDPP, the leader of the ruling People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA), agreed to merge with the NPF. The PDA also includes BJP members and the NPF’s two state legislators. The NPF has a strong base in neighboring states such as Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh, where it holds five seats in the 60‑member assembly.
Rio’s election signals a new era for the NPF and helps reinforce regional unity and the Naga cause. His leadership promises transparency, effective governance, and a people‑first approach to politics.
