Amaravati, Oct 23 – Andhra Pradesh’s chief minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, is monitoring a heavy‑rain event from his visit to the UAE. The state is battling a low‑pressure system that has slammed parts of South Coastal Andhra and Rayalseema with torrential showers.

While in Dubai, Naidu spoke to key officials and urged them to stay on high alert. He instructed the state’s disaster teams to move National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) units into the affected districts – Nellore, Prakasam, Bapatla, Kadapa and Tirupati – to protect lives and property.

The chief minister asked the Revenue, Disaster, Police, Irrigation, Municipal and Electricity departments to coordinate closely. He also told officials to relocate residents from low‑lying areas to safer ground. Control rooms in the struck districts are already active, and teams are ready to act.

Naidu highlighted the risk of weakened canal and pond banks, ordering engineers to reinforce them. He also ordered the set‑up of medical camps to ward off infectious diseases that can spread after flooding.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Andhra Pradesh, warning that very heavy rain is expected in the next 24 hours. Flash floods could hit Guntur, Prakasam, Nellore, Chittoor, Kurnool, and Yanam. Home and Disaster Management Minister V. Anitha has directed irrigation officials to keep sandbags on standby along embankments and advised fishermen against venturing to sea amid 30–40 km/h winds.

Meteorologists note that a low‑pressure area over north‑coastal Tamil Nadu is moving west‑northwest and may shift into inland Tamil Nadu within 12 hours. Heavy rainfall could touch Chittoor, Tirupati, Nellore, Prakasam and Kurnool today, while a moderate shower is expected across most of South Coastal Andhra and Rayalseema.

Officials urge residents to stay tuned to local alerts and to follow evacuation orders if issued.
