The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) hosted a live webinar on Friday to mark National Cyber Security Awareness Month. More than 250 participants joined the online session, which drew officials from DoT field units, telecom operators and internet service providers.
Key goals of the webinar
- Raise awareness about the rising threat of phishing, vishing and AI‑driven scams.
- Share ways to strengthen cyber governance in the telecom sector.
- Build organisational resilience and improve readiness to respond to incidents.
Director General of Telecom (DG) Sunita Chandra opened the event. She stressed that keeping India’s telecom network safe is a shared duty. “Every user, every employee, and every regulator must stay alert and act proactively,” she said.
Adding to the message, Additional DG Suresh Puri briefed attendees on the Telecom‑CSIRT (Computer Security Incident Response Team) that is now being set up across DoT field units. The team will help diagnose problems faster and keep the network stronger.
Cyber‑security specialist Rohit Gautam highlighted that phishing still causes almost 90 % of global data breaches. He warned that human‑centric attacks—phishing emails, phone‑based scams (vishing), and deep‑fake videos—cost the world more than $9.5 trillion each year.
Industry expert Abhijit Tripathy explained how Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) frameworks can protect telecom companies. He urged a blend of people, processes and technology to tighten internal controls and cut vulnerabilities.
Sampat Ray, another cyber‑security thinker, pointed out the rise of AI‑enhanced attacks, from deep‑fake phishing to malicious mobile apps and voice scams. He urged telecom firms and everyday users to stay on guard against such sophisticated fraud.
The webinar underlined three core ideas: collective responsibility, smart decision‑making, and relentless vigilance. By working together, India’s telecom ecosystem can stay safer and more resilient against evolving cyber threats.
