GST 2.0 rollout, festive demand drive record two-wheeler sales in Oct to 1.85 million; highest this year

New Delhi – India’s two‑wheeler market got a major boost in October, with registrations hitting 1.85 million units – the highest month of the year – after the rollout of GST 2.0.

The jump comes from a mix of falling taxes and a surge in festive buying. Under the new tax plan, the GST on motorcycles up to 350 cc slipped from 28 % to 18 %. The lower price tag has made bikes and scooters more affordable, and buyers are rushing to snap up new models before Diwali.

Earlier in September, the industry was already showing a comeback. Two‑wheeler manufacturers saw dispatches rise 9 % year‑on‑year, crossing the two‑million‑unit mark thanks to both the tax cut and holiday bargains.

Hero MotoCorp – India’s largest two‑wheeler maker – grew its wholesale sales by 5 % to 647,582 units. Registrations in September jumped 19 % to 323,230 bikes.

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) posted a modest 3 % rise, selling 505,000 units.

TVS Motor Company led the pack with a solid 12 % increase to 413,000 units, propelled by strong scooter sales.

From the auto‑iconic Bajaj Auto, dispatches climbed 5 % to 273,000 units. Royal Enfield, part of Eicher Motors, surged the most – up 43 % to 113,000 units – as enthusiasts sought the brand’s premium bikes.

Analysts note the festive period has kept the momentum high, especially after a slow start in early September during the Shraad observance. “GST cuts, fresh model releases, and Diwali offers have lifted consumer sentiment,” said a sector analyst.

According to Axis Securities, the broader auto sector shows a mixed picture. While two‑wheelers, three‑wheelers, and commercial vehicles are enjoying growth, passenger car sales slipped year‑on‑year.

The clear takeaway? The new GST 2.0 framework and Diwali‑season shopping are driving India’s two‑wheeler market to record highs, with key players like Hero MotoCorp, Honda, TVS, Bajaj Auto, and Royal Enfield riding the wave.
