Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan met Mauritius’s Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam in Victoria, Seychelles, on Sunday to boost ties between the two countries. The leaders talked about their long‑standing friendship rooted in shared history and culture and explored new ways to strengthen India‑Mauritius relations.
Earlier in the day, the Vice President greeted the Indian community in Seychelles. He praised the community’s role in deepening bilateral cooperation and highlighted the “long‑standing and multi‑faceted ties” between India and Seychelles.
Radhakrishnan is on a two‑day visit to Seychelles, where he will attend the swearing‑in ceremony of President‑elect Patrick Herminie. He will convey India’s warm wishes and reaffirm the close, time‑tested relationship between the two islands. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the visit underlines India’s “Vision MAHASAGAR” commitment to the Global South and its resolve to strengthen partnership with Seychelles.
India and Seychelles have a long history of friendship, cooperation and security support. The first Indians arrived in 1770 as plantation workers, and diplomatic ties were formally established in 1976, the year Seychelles gained independence. A contingent from the Indian naval ship INS Nilgiri celebrated the new republic.
India opened its mission in Victoria in 1979, appointed its first resident High Commissioner in 1987, and Seychelles set up a resident mission in New Delhi in 2008. Today, India’s engagement with Seychelles remains a key pillar of its broader outreach across the Indian Ocean.
