Johnny Depp says he feels like he’s part of Tim Burton’s family after working together on several hit movies.
The 62‑year‑old actor reflected on how Burton let him keep filming the 2007 musical horror “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” while his daughter Lily‑Rose was seriously ill. When Lily‑Rose was seven, she developed a form of kidney failure caused by an E. coli infection and had to go on dialysis. Depp had to ask Burton, “I’m sorry, but I can’t work until my baby’s better.” Burton replied, “Don’t even talk that way – we’ll do whatever it takes. She’ll be fine.”
In the third episode of the new four‑part docuseries Tim Burton: Life in the Line, the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star called Burton a friend and said he would have been ready to put the project on pause if needed.
The two stars first met in “Edward Scissorhands” (1990) and later worked on “Ed Wood” (1994), “Sleepy Hollow” (1999), the 2005 “Corpse Bride”, and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”
Depp and singer‑singer, now mother of Lily‑Rose and son Jack, lived near the hospital for over three weeks while Lily‑Rose fought her illness. Burton even sent flowers the day after Depp explained his situation.
Producer Derek Frey recalled that production of “Sweeney Todd” shut down for a couple of weeks while Depp’s family was in the hospital. He noted how deep, emotional themes in the film mirrored the personal challenges he was facing at the time.
Lily‑Rose, now 26, followed in her dad’s footsteps and says she loves exploring darker roles. In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar, she said she was drawn to “Edward Scissorhands” as a child and found the story relatable because it showed a “kinda crazy” kid being treated poorly. She explains that she enjoys roles that let her dive into complex emotions, just like her father’s work.
The couple’s relationship with Burton shows how Hollywood collaborations can become family‑like bonds, united by shared challenges and a love for storytelling.
