WASHINGTON – In a sharp statement posted on X on Monday, Tara Chand, the head of the Baloch American Congress, accused Pakistan’s government of holding Baloch human‑rights leaders in jail for more than seven months. He blasted the authorities for what he called a “cruel conspiracy” and urged Baloch people worldwide to join a peaceful protest.
Chand focused on the plight of Mahrang Baloch, a central organizer of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC). According to Chand, Mahrang, along with other leaders Bebarg Baloch and Sibgatullah Shah, and activists Beebow Baloch and Gulzadi Baloch, are being tortured in prison. He said the Pakistani military and secret police hold them because Mahrang is a “voice and symbol of Baloch resistance.”
“The courts, provincial government, and all institutions are controlled by the Pakistani rulers,” Chand wrote. “They will never release Mahrang because she represents Baloch strength.” He added that the women’s struggle is “testing the courage” of the Baloch nation and called for a united, peaceful movement to secure their freedom.
Chand urged all “patriotic and democratic parties who love Balochistan” to rally together. He said it is a moral duty to stand firm, unite, and fight for Mahrang’s release and for the dignity of all Baloch people.
The Baloch Yakjehti Committee has denounced the jail trial of its leaders in Pakistan’s Anti‑Terrorism Court. The group claimed the trial was a cover for political revenge. They say the imprisoned activists have been in custody for seven months, with the first three months unlawful under the Maintenance of Public Order law. The committee says false cases and fabricated FIRs were used to keep them detained.
The BYC condemns the entire process as a violation of basic human rights and a clear example of state oppression. It also accuses the Pakistani authorities of using the legal system to silence dissent and stifle the fight for Baloch civil rights.
