FIDE World Cup 2025: India’s Narayanan, Diptayan, Aronyak advance to the second round

Panaji, Nov 3 – Two top Indian chess players secured spots in the second round of the FIDE World Cup 2025 after decisive rapid victories. GM Narayanan SL and GM Diptayan Ghosh each won both their rapid games, while fellow grandmaster Aronyak Ghosh finished strong in the second‑stage tiebreaker.
### Narayanan’S rapid triumph
Narayanan, playing with the black pieces, opened the first rapid game by outmaneuvering Peru’s IM Steven Rojas in 52 moves. He followed that with a swift 22‑move win using the white pieces, demonstrating why he was seen as a favourite in the tiebreak. “In the shorter format I’m pretty strong,” Narayanan said. “I even check my odds on ChatGPT before a match.” His confidence grew after the first‑game win, and he will now face England’s GM Nikita Vitiugov in Round 2.
### Diptayan’s steady success
On the adjacent board, Diptayan Ghosh began with a 70‑move win over China’s GM Peng Xiongjian. He capitalised on two advancing pawns that manoeuvred into a position to revive his queen. In the next rapid game, he finished in 46 moves, setting up a potential clash with GM Ian Niempocnyachchi in the next round.
### Aronyak’s clinical play
Aronyak Ghosh opened the second‑stage rapid tiebreaker with a 54‑move win against Poland’s GM Mateusz Bartel. He then forced a 20‑move resignation from the same opponent, showing a keen understanding of tempo. He will now face the U.S. great GM Levon Aronian.
### India’s strong field
India already had six players – Surya Shekhar Ganguly, Pranav V, Raunak Sadhwani, Pranesh M, Karthik Venkatraman, and Iniyan Pa – locked into the second round from Sunday’s results. Two more, including Aronyak, hit the next stage, stiffening India’s chances of a place in the third round. Karthik will face GM Aravindh Chithambaram in Tuesday’s clash.
The FIDE World Cup 2025 is a single‑elimination tournament featuring 206 competitors from 82 countries, all vying for the Viswanathan Anand Cup. With three rounds already decided, the excitement continues to build as players advance, each game drawing global attention from chess fans and casual followers alike.
