Samsung Electronics has told U.S. regulators it will appeal a Texas jury’s verdict that ordered the company to pay $191.4 million for infringing OLED display patents owned by Irish firm Pictiva Displays.
The jury, sitting in Marshall, Texas, found that Samsung’s phones, TVs, laptops and wearables use two OLED technologies protected by Pictiva’s patents. The company denies the claims and says it will fight the decision in court. Samsung is also arguing that the patents are invalid in a separate case before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

This ruling is part of a wave of Texas patent fights involving Samsung. In November, another federal jury in the same city awarded $445.5 million to Collision Communications, a New Hampshire‑based wireless‑network company, after finding Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones and laptop computers infringed four of its network‑efficiency patents.

Samsung officials say the company will appeal both verdicts and continue to defend its technology. The outcomes of these cases could set new precedents for how U.S. patent disputes are handled against major tech firms.
