New Delhi, Nov 5 – The 2026 Women’s Premier League (WPL) player‑retention list will go live Thursday, just after the fourth T20I between India and Australia ends in Gold Coast, Queensland.
All five Indian franchises have already filed their final lists by Wednesday’s deadline, and a mix of well‑known stars is expected to stay on their squads while others head straight to the mega auction in New Delhi on November 27. A source familiar with the process said, “Once the men’s T20I finishes, we’ll know the official WPL retentions.”
How the retention system works
Each team can keep up to:
- 3 capped Indian players
- 2 overseas players
- 2 uncapped Indian players
If a club retains the full five slots, at least one must be an uncapped Indian. The auction purse for 2026 is set at ₹15 crore. Retention payments are tiered: ₹3.5 crore for Player 1, ₹2.5 crore for Player 2, ₹1.75 crore for Player 3, ₹1 crore for Player 4, and ₹50 lakh for Player 5.
Teams can also use a “Right to Match” (RTM) option to re‑buy players from the 2025 WPL rosters, with a limit of five RTMs per team. The number of RTMs available decreases as more players are retained: retaining five players eliminates RTMs entirely, while keeping just one player grants the team three RTMs.
Who might stay and who will auction
Recent ODI World Cup winners Jemimah Rodrigues, Shafali Verma, and Niki Prasad could be among the retained Indian stars, joined by overseas all‑rounders Marizanne Kapp and Annabel Sutherland. Australian captain Meg Lanning could move to the auction if her team does not keep all five spots.
Gujarat Giants are likely to lock in Ashleigh Gardner and Beth Mooney, while UP Warriors may keep only Shweta Sehrawat, the top scorer of the 2023 U19 Women’s T20 World Cup. Deepti Sharma, who earned Player of the Tournament at the ODI World Cup, is expected to move to the auction after stepping away from the UP Warriors, where she led in 2025.
Defending champions Mumbai Indians probably’ll retain Harmanpreet Kaur, Amanjot Kaur, Nat Sciver‑Brunt, and G Kamalini. The choice of their fifth overseas player—whether it’s Hayley Matthews or Amelia Kerr—remains undecided.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the 2024 champions, will likely keep ODI
