Calcutta HC’s RG Kar rape & murder case bench lead judge recuses himself from hearing

In Kolkata, the judge who had been leading the high‑court hearing on the R.G. Kar rape‑and‑murder case stepped aside. Justice Debangshu Basak, the senior judge on the division bench, recused himself on Thursday, leaving the case in the hands of Acting Chief Justice Sujay Paul. Mr. Paul will pick a new bench to take on the matter.
The case centers on a junior doctor who was raped and murdered inside the state‑run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital last August. Her parents have been calling for a fresh probe after they felt the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigation was inadequate. The CBI’s investigation found Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer linked to the Kolkata Police, the sole suspect. Mr. Roy was later sentenced to life in jail by a trial court in the city.
The parents had already asked a single‑judge bench of Justice Tirthankar Ghosh to re‑open the case, only for him to recuse himself a year earlier. They then moved to the division bench of Justice Basak and Justice Md. Shabbar Rashidi. With Justice Basak stepping down, the case will again be re‑assigned, and the Supreme Court and the trial court continue to follow its progress.
The R.G. Kar case remains a high‑profile story in Kolkata, drawing attention to hospital safety, justice for victims, and the role of the CBI in serious crimes.
