Los Angeles, Nov 6 – 90‑year‑old Dame Judi Dench told British audiences that she can no longer watch TV or enjoy stage performances because of macular degeneration, the leading cause of vision loss in people over 50.
Speaking at the Theatre Royal in Bury St Edmunds—where she is one of the patrons—Dench said, “I can’t see any more. When I go to the theatre, I can’t see. Hopeless.” She added that the condition has also ruined her ability to watch the BBC’s Celebrity Traitors with her friend Dame Celia Imrie.
Dench first revealed her eye problem back in 2012. In January she gave a darker update, explaining the fast‑moving loss of central vision. In a recent interview with Trinny Woodall’s Fearless podcast, she shared that she now has to depend on others to navigate daily life, because she can’t see where she’s walking.
She spoke about the challenge of reading scripts: “I’ve had to find another way of learning lines,” Dench said in 2021 at a London‑based Vision Foundation event. “I rely on friends to repeat them for me, so I learn through repetition. I just hope people don’t notice if I’m having a hard time.”
The 90‑year‑old star’s publicly spoken struggles highlight how macular degeneration can change even a celebrated actress’s routine, affecting both work on stage and simple pleasures like watching TV.
