India’s textile sector aims to reach $250 billion by 2030 with $100 billion exports: Giriraj Singh

India’s textile industry is booming, and Union Minister Giriraj Singh has big plans to make it even bigger. Right now, the sector is worth a massive $179 billion, with exports hitting $37.75 billion. The goal? Reach a $250 billion domestic market and $100 billion in exports by 2030. That’s exciting news for India’s economy!

The minister shared these ambitions during a meeting with micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the textile and apparel world. He called the sector a shining example of India’s economic power and rich cultural heritage. It contributes almost 2% to India’s GDP and keeps the country as the world’s 6th largest textile exporter, grabbing a 4.1% slice of global trade.

“India’s textiles reach over 220 countries, and more than 520 districts are buzzing with activity,” Singh said. He linked this to the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ vision and the Swadeshi spirit, which focuses on self-reliance and homegrown products.

Even with global ups and downs, like high tariffs from some trade partners, India’s textile exports show real strength. In July 2025, they jumped 5.37% to $3.10 billion. From April to July 2025, exports climbed to $12.18 billion, up 3.87% from last year.

Breaking it down by segments, readymade garments grew by 7.87%, carpets by 3.57%, and jute products soared 15.78%. Handicrafts and man-made fibre (MMF) textiles held steady, proving the sector’s diverse appeal.

Singh pointed out positive trends in key free trade agreement (FTA) countries, helping India eye a bigger share of the $590 billion global textile market. He pushed for smart moves like expanding into 40 new international markets while boosting demand at home.

Big wins came from the 56th GST Council meeting, which brought second-generation reforms to the textile value chain. These changes cut distortions, lower costs, spark more demand, and make Indian exports more competitive. MSME exporters cheered the updates but asked for ongoing tax support, easier rules, and better global promotion for handlooms, handicrafts, and GI-tagged Swadeshi products.

To take things further, the minister urged setting up warehouses in major spots like the EU and US. This will help push handicrafts, handlooms, and lifestyle products through e-commerce, reaching more buyers worldwide.

With these steps, India’s textile sector looks set to weave a brighter future for jobs, growth, and global pride.
