Typhoon Kalmaegi leaves five dead in central Vietnam

Typhoon Kalmaegi slammed into central Vietnam on Thursday, leaving a trail of destruction and loss. The storm brought fierce winds and relentless rain, knocking down trees and damaging roofs across several provinces.
In Dak Lak province, three people lost their lives, while two others died in Gia Lai province. In total, at least five people have died and six others are injured. Local officials say 52 houses collapsed and more than 2,500 homes suffered damage.
The Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Environment reported that the typhoon weakened into a tropical depression early Friday and later turned into a low‑pressure area over southern Laos. Despite this, the damage was severe: power lines snapped, leaving hundreds of thousands of residents without electricity, and many flights were cancelled or delayed.
Airports in the region felt the impact too. Da Nang, Phu Bai, Lien Khuong, Chu Lai, Phu Cat, Tuy Hoa, Pleiku and Buon Ma Thuot all saw disruptions. The Civil Aviation Authority kept all airports on a 24‑hour watch, and the Airports Corporation of Vietnam was tasked with inspecting runways and communication systems for any damage.
Vietnam Airlines announced that more than 50 flights scheduled for Thursday and Friday were affected, as the airline adjusted routes to keep passengers safe. Rescue teams are still turning up emergency calls and clearing debris, but strong winds and flooding are slowing progress.
Local authorities remain in the midst of damage assessments and are working on recovery. Meanwhile, the community braces for continued travel disruptions and uncertainty as Typhoon Kalmaegi steers toward the rest of central and southern Vietnam.
