Green shouldn’t be in Test team if he’s not bowling: Ian Healy

Australian legend Ian Healy voiced his opinion on the Ashes squad, saying Cameron Green should not make the first Test XI if he can’t bowl.

Healy sparked the debate on SENQ Breakfast, noting that Green has bowled only four overs in competitive cricket this summer after back surgery. A return to international bowling in the ODI series against India was ruled out after a side‑strain complaint.

“If Green can bat but can’t bowl, that’s a problem,” Healy said. He added that the all‑rounder Beau Webster could take on bowling duties at No. 6 and still contribute with the bat.

Healy also outlined how the Australian batting order might look if Green is dropped. He said Marnus Labuschagne could move to third, and Jake Weatherald could open the innings. “Labuschagne can open as well as he can play at three, but we’d rather have him at three,” Healy explained.

If Green stays in the side, Healy wants Labuschagne to open with Usman Khawaja, creating a shuffle of the “deck chairs.” He stressed that Green needs to bowl 10 overs a day in the Sheffield Shield to share the load with Australia’s fast trio.

The former Australian wicket‑keeper‑keeper’s comments come as selectors prepare the squad for the opening Ashes Test in New Delhi. The debate will continue as officials weigh Green’s limited bowling experience against his potential contributions with the bat.
