Guwahati welcomed a fresh wave of river‑tourism excitement on Friday when Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma unveiled the new Guwahati Gateway Terminal and jetty. The project comes alongside the Sati Radhika Shaanti Udyan riverfront development, aiming to turn the Brahmaputra into a bustling hub for visitors and locals alike.

Sarma called the terminal “unique” and said no other Indian river terminal matches its size or design. “We built it to give Assam a lift in river‑tourism,” he told reporters. “The state has huge untapped potential, and this is the first big step to unlock it.”

The terminal’s layout and amenities let guests enjoy leisurely river walks and short cruises, similar to the experiences seen in places like Singapore and Bangkok. “In those cities people spend a few hours cruising the river, and now people in Guwahati can do the same,” Sarma explained. “The Brahmaputra is always our lifeline; now it can also drive tourism.”

When the new Guwahati‑North Guwahati bridge opens, ferry services across the river will become less important. That shift will free up waterway space so tourism‑related river transport can grow. The government is already planning new cruise and leisure vessels for the waterway.

Sarma highlighted that the terminal fits the Centre’s Maritime India Vision 2030, which promotes sustainable port infrastructure and expands inland waterways for trade and tourism. Located on National Waterway‑2, the upgraded terminal will improve passenger movement, boost cargo handling, highlight Assam’s heritage, and link the Northeast more strongly.

He believes the upgraded terminal and riverfront will become a landmark for Guwahati, drawing tourists from all over India and the world.
