‘To run Sangh, not a single paisa is taken from external sources’: RSS chief Bhagwat
Bengaluru, India – In a packed auditorium in Bengaluru, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat announced that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) never takes money from outside sources.
The statement came during a two‑day lecture series marking the RSS’s 100th anniversary. Bhagwat explained that every year, volunteers donate what they can. Even those with limited means cut back on daily expenses – like skipping pulses for a year – to give a small contribution to the organisation.
“This keeps us independent,” he said. “No outside cash means no outside pressure, and we can speak truthfully and freely.” He added that the RSS is self‑sufficient in “men, money, and ammunition.”
The chief reflected on the early days of the RSS. Founder Dr. Madhav Ishwar Hegdewar was unknown at the time, and the idea of Hindutva had little support. “It was the dedication of Hegdewar and the first volunteers that turned the RSS into what it is today,” Bhagwat recalled.
He also addressed criticism that the RSS is a “menace.” “These accusations come only from words, not from hearts,” he said. “People’s hearts are with us.”
According to Bhagwat, the RSS’s purpose is to organise and unite Hindu society, not to seek power. “We don’t want prominence. We want a united nation for the glory of Bharat Mata,” he added.
The conference aims to share reliable information about the RSS. Bhagwat warned that recent discussions often rely on hearsay rather than facts. He said the RSS has no comparable organisation worldwide and that misunderstandings arise when people lack solid information.
In 2018 the RSS decided to publish authentic details so that everyone can form an opinion based on truth, not perception. “The RSS was not born from a reaction or opposition, it was created because Hindu society needed solid organisation,” Bhagwat clarified.
