Asian Cricket Council to hold more events after Asia Cup success: Report

Mumbai, Nov 8 – The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) just approved a push to bring more cricket to emerging Asian nations.
During its Doha meeting, the ACC announced plans for a “Legend of Asia” tournament and a league for its associate members. The new events will be staged in countries with upgraded facilities, mainly Oman and Doha.
The decision follows the strong performance of the recent Asia Cup, hosted by the United Arab Emirates in September. An ACC spokesperson told TelecomAsia Sport that the Cup’s higher‑than‑expected viewership showed that there is a big appetite for cricket across the region.
The ACC Chairman, Mohsin Naqvi of Pakistan, said the board is moving quickly to develop a detailed plan. “We have to grow cricket in the new Asian countries,” Naqvi told the media. “The ACC will provide all the support the emerging cricket boards need.”
The first event in the new lineup is the Rising Stars Asia Cup, renamed from the Emerging Asia Cup. The 18‑day T20 tournament will run from Nov 14‑23 in Doha. Eight teams will compete: Pakistan, India, Oman, the UAE, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Hong Kong.
The opening match will feature a Pakistan‑India encounter on Nov 14, a match that attracts huge global interest. ACC and the Pakistan Cricket Board are waiting to hear India’s reaction to the player‑handshake protocol, and whether the Pakistani captain will receive the trophy from Naqvi, who will be chief guest at the final.
With these new events, the ACC hopes to tap into the growing fan base and give players from smaller cricketing nations more chances to shine. The upgraded media and sporting venues in Doha and Oman are ready to host the exciting new tournaments, setting the stage for a bright future for Asian cricket.
