Vice President Radhakrishnan to visit Karnataka today

C.P. Radhakrishnan, India’s Vice‑President, will head to Karnataka for the first time on Sunday after taking office in September. The trip is part of a broader tour of the southern state and the country’s southern cultural regions.
While in Karnataka, the Vice‑President will take part in a major Jain event at Shravanabelagola in Hassan district. The ceremony commemorates the centenary of Acharya Shri 108 Shanti Sagar Maharaj’s historic visit in 1925. Radhakrishnan will help install an idol of the revered monk and attend the naming of a new hill in the town. The act underscores how the Jain community celebrates 100 years of spiritual leadership.
Later that day the Vice‑President will attend the sixteenth convocation of the JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research in Mysuru. The academy is linked to the Jagadguru Sri Veerasimhasana Mahasamsthana Math in Suttur Srikshetra. After the ceremony, the Vice‑President will speak to the graduates, encouraging them to use education for social progress.
The tour also includes a visit to the historic Suttur Math, one of Karnataka’s most respected monastic centres. The Vice‑President will offer prayers at two major temples – the Shree Chamundeshwari Devi Temple near Mysuru and the Cheluvanarayana Swamy Temple in Melkote, Mandya. These stops highlight the state’s rich heritage and the intertwining of faith and culture.
In addition to the religious visits, Radhakrishnan spoke about Jainism’s global influence. He highlighted four core Jain principles—Ahimsa (non‑violence), Satya (truth), Aparigraha (non‑possessiveness), and Anekantavada (many‑sided truth)—and how they shape India and the world. He praised Mahatma Gandhi’s use of Ahimsa during India’s freedom struggle and noted that the principle inspires peace movements worldwide.
The Vice‑President also touched on vegetarianism and animal compassion—key Jain values that promote sustainable living. He shared that he began a vegetarian diet 25 years ago after visiting Kashi, stating that the choice has taught him humility and love for all creatures.
Finally, Radhakrishnan acknowledged the government’s support for preserving ancient languages and texts. He lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiatives to grant “Classical Language” status to Prakrit and to preserve Jain manuscripts through the Gyan Bharatham Mission. The visit reflects a blend of cultural celebration, educational outreach, and a reaffirmation of India’s diverse spiritual heritage.
