Pabitra Margherita, India’s Minister of State for External Affairs, flew to La Paz on November 9 to mark a new chapter in India‑Bolivia ties. He attended the inauguration of Rodrigo Paz Pereira, who was sworn in as Bolivia’s president on October 19, and greeted the new leader with greetings from Indian President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The minister posted on X that India is “committed to strengthening its partnership with Bolivia and working together on shared interests.”
Prime Minister Modi had already congratulated Pereira on his election, noting that the close friendship between the two countries has long underpinned mutually beneficial cooperation. He urged both sides to deepen partnership for “shared progress and prosperity.”
During his visit, Margherita opened the new “India House” in La Paz, the official residence of the Indian ambassador. He described the ceremony as a “new chapter in India‑Bolivia relations.” The event welcomed Indian community members, Bolivian cultural groups, and local dignitaries.
The minister also met with alumni of the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Programme in Bolivia, celebrating the positive impact of India’s development partnership on local professionals.
Business leaders and entrepreneurs from Bolivia joined Margherita at the embassy, where he highlighted opportunities in minerals, textiles, tourism, and pharmaceuticals. He encouraged Bolivian investors to explore India’s growing market and invited them to visit the country.
Margherita inaugurated the new chancery building of the Indian embassy, calling it an “important milestone in advancing India’s diplomatic engagement with Bolivia.” He launched the celebration of 150 years of India’s national anthem, “Vande Mataram,” which featured performances by talented Bolivian youth.
In line with Prime Minister Modi’s “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative, the minister planted a sapling at Mallasa Park in La Paz and offered floral tributes at a Mahatma Gandhi bust.
He also met La Paz’s mayor, Ivan Arias, discussing cooperation in yoga, culture, healthcare, urban planning, and the promotion of Gandhian philosophy.
Overall, the visit underscored India’s commitment to deepening bilateral ties, boosting trade, and fostering cultural exchange between India and Bolivia.
