Partha Chatterjee writes to Mamata Banerjee questioning his suspension from TMC

Partha Chatterjee, the former West Bengal education minister, has sent a letter to party leader Mamata Banerjee asking why his membership was suspended after his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The letter was also sent to other senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders, including Abhishek Banerjee and state president Subrata Bakshi.

Chatterjee was released on bail today after spending more than three years in prison. He wrote to Bonerjee requesting details about the TMC constitution clauses that led to his suspension. The TMC had already removed him from all ministerial and party roles when the ED took him into custody in July 2022 over a multi‑crore cash‑for‑school job scam. The party even abolished the Secretary General post that Chatterjee previously held.

Inside voices close to Chatterjee say that he pointed out the party often supports members who are arrested by central agencies, but his case was treated differently. He remains hopeful about a political comeback. “I will visit the people of Behala (Paschim) Assembly constituency—where I served as a five‑time TMC legislator since 2001—to hear their views,” he told reporters after returning to his ancestral home in South Kolkata.

Chatterjee stressed that he remains accountable only to the people of Behala (Paschim) and believes the judicial system will ultimately reveal the truth.
