The Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), a key initiative from the Modi government, marked its fifth anniversary on Wednesday. Launched back in 2020, this scheme has transformed lives in rural India by helping farmers switch to modern fish farming and other sustainable methods.

Over the past five years, PMMSY has created lakhs of jobs in the fisheries sector and boosted incomes for many. It’s all about empowering farmers and coastal communities with better tools and opportunities in aquaculture and inland fisheries.

Take Bhudev Singh, a farmer from Haridwar in Uttarakhand, for example. His inspiring story went viral on social media, shared by the popular X handle Modi Story. After the COVID-19 challenges, Bhudev decided to try fish farming. He built a pond in his village and kicked off the venture with a subsidized loan of Rs 1.76 lakh under PMMSY.

The results? In just one year, his income skyrocketed compared to traditional farming. Now, he’s doubled his earnings through this modern approach, and his family’s standard of living has improved big time. In a touching video, Bhudev even recalls chatting directly with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose words gave him the confidence to keep going.

PMMSY aims for big wins in India’s fisheries sector. With a total investment of Rs 20,050 crore over five years, it focuses on sustainable growth. Around Rs 12,340 crore goes to beneficiary programs in marine, inland fisheries, and aquaculture, while Rs 7,710 crore builds essential infrastructure.

The scheme targets adding 70 lakh tonnes to fish production, pushing fisheries exports to Rs 1 lakh crore, and doubling incomes for fishers and farmers. It also plans to cut post-harvest losses from 20-25% to just 10% and create 55 lakh direct and indirect jobs in fisheries and related fields.

Stories like Bhudev’s show how PMMSY is making a real difference, one pond at a time.
