‘We have to bow before mandate of people’: K’taka CM on Mahaghatbandhan’s setback in Bihar
Siddaramaiah, the chief minister of Karnataka, welcomed the BJP‑led victory in the recent Bihar assembly elections and said the people’s decision must stand. He spoke to reporters in Bengaluru after pinning a garland on Jawaharlal Nehru’s statue inside Vidhana Soudha on the former prime minister’s birth anniversary.
“We’ll accept the verdict of the people of Bihar,” he said, keeping his comments about his own position within the Congress silent.
The comments come amid rumours of a leadership shift in Karnataka, with deputy chief minister D. K. Shivakumar reportedly pushing for the CM’s post.
During his remarks, Siddaramaiah highlighted Nehru’s legacy. “Today marks the birth anniversary of the first prime minister after independence,” he said. “We celebrate it also as Children’s Day because Nehru loved and protected children as the future of India.”
He praised Nehru as the architect of modern India, noting his early patriotism, active role in the freedom struggle, and years of imprisonment by the British. “He laid the groundwork for the country’s science and agriculture, and his Five‑Year Plans helped build our industries, reservoirs, and dams,” the chief minister added.
Siddaramaiah criticized the BJP, saying its leaders, including Narendra Modi and the RSS, tend to focus only on attacking Gandhi and Nehru. “They didn’t actually fight for freedom,” he noted, recalling that Gandhi and Nehru were the real architects of independence.
The statement from Karnataka’s chief minister comes as the state gears up for its own elections, while the Mahagathbandhan coalition looks to rebound after the loss in Bihar.
