In the days after the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) captured more than 200 seats in Bihar, senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh blasted the Election Commission, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah in a fiery post on X. He accused the top officials of orchestrating a massive “vote chori” (vote‑stealing) scheme that he said ruined the free choice of voters.

Ramesh wrote that the Bihar results “reflected vote chori on a gigantic scale – masterminded by the PM, the HM, and the Election Commission.” He added that the Congress is “ready to fight harder to protect the Constitution and save our democracy.” The comments come as the Congress party slid from 19 seats in 2020 to only 5‑6 seats in this election, having contested 61 constituencies as part of the Mahagathbandhan.

The NDA’s surge past 200 seats was helped by record women turnout and a strategy that reached across caste lines. In contrast, the NDA’s seat haul dropped from 110 in 2020 to under 40 this year, showing a sharp reversal for the opposition coalition.

Congress leaders cited “systematic deletions” from voter lists during the polling period, especially from booths dominated by Muslim, Dalit and EBC voters. They also claimed that the Election Commission’s special summary revisions disproportionately targeted opposition strongholds. In at least 47 constituencies, party workers filed complaints about names missing from electoral rolls. The Election Commission said the changes were routine clean‑ups to remove duplicates and deceased voters, while some leaders in the INDIA bloc were split over the “vote chori” accusation.

Left partners echoed worries about EVM reliability and voter-list discrepancies, but RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav resisted fully endorsing the Congress narrative, pointing to “women and EBC voters” and internal weaknesses as reasons for the loss.

The BJP responded quickly. Union Minister Giriraj Singh called Ramesh’s statements “sour grapes from a party seeing its end in Bihar.” Amit Shah added that the people had rejected dynastic politics and appeasement, and that Congress was insulting the mandate given by Bihar’s voters.

With upcoming civic polls and the 2026 contests in West Bengal and Assam looming, Jairam Ramesh’s attack signals that the opposition will focus on alleged institutional capture rather than their own organizational shortcomings. The Congress’s “Save Constitution” campaign is set to play out in the next few months as they aim to regain footing in the region.
