Indian diplomacy’s special call for handling a multipolar world order

India’s smart diplomacy shines in a shifting world order, where proxy wars and big-power rivalries like the US-China competition are reshaping global ties. As India positions itself as a rising world power, it sticks to strategic autonomy—building strong bilateral relations based on shared security and economic gains, without picking sides in ideological blocs.

Think about it: groups like BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), led by the China-Russia duo, contrast with the US-backed Quad, which aims to check China’s moves in the Indo-Pacific. India’s active role in all three highlights its diplomatic skill. This multi-group approach boosts India’s image as a champion of world peace and humanitarian progress, especially in today’s multipolar landscape. The goal? Prevent any slide back to Cold War-style divisions.

For India, success lies in flexible foreign policy, strategic patience, and pushing for humanity’s bigger picture. Diplomacy mixes sharp communication with forward-thinking ideas—something like Einstein’s wisdom that imagination trumps mere knowledge. It means spotting opportunities others miss. No two relationships are alike, so Indian diplomats craft unique bonds amid geopolitical twists.

Take the Middle East: India balances ties with Israel, Iran, and Saudi Arabia, despite their clashing alignments. China’s and Russia’s support for Iran clashes with US backing for Israel, risking Cold War echoes. This tests non-aligned India’s savvy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi drives this foreign policy personally, thanks to his rapport with global leaders and grasp of trends. It’s key for protecting national security and economic interests—foreign policy stems from these priorities, with the National Security Advisor playing a big role. Today, diplomacy teams up with intelligence to read security threats, creating a holistic national strategy that adapts to fast-changing geopolitics.

Remember Modi’s SCO summit trip to Tianjin, China? His meetings with President Xi Jinping and Russia’s Vladimir Putin drew a quirky reaction from then-US President Donald Trump. Trump worried India was leaning toward the China-Russia side, even floating punitive tariffs over India’s Russian oil buys—yet he added they “get along very well.” This underscores India’s need for balance: nurture US ties while keeping Russia close, tailoring moves to each partnership.

India holds the sovereign right to choose friends and foes based on the global scene. Chief of Defence Staff Gen Chauhan flags border tensions with China and Pakistan-backed terrorism as top threats. The China-Pakistan alliance ramps up during flare-ups, like the Pahalgam terror attack that sparked India-Pakistan clashes—putting this axis at the heart of India’s security agenda.

Trump slammed Islamic terrorism but eyed trade with Pakistan, despite its role in sheltering terror groups. Indian diplomacy must school US leaders on Middle East lessons, where Israel-Iran friction echoes a deeper clash between faiths. Such religion-fueled wars drag on and threaten democracies worldwide. Democratizing Arab societies could spark peace—India and the US, as top democracies, should team up for regional and global stability.

Modi’s push for self-reliance via ‘Make in India’, plus bilateral friendships without full alignments, favors peaceful fixes for conflicts like Ukraine-Russia, Iran-Israel, or Gaza. India must counter the Sino-Pak threat, differentiate China from Russia, balance US-Russia relations (noting Trump-Putin’s rapport), strengthen southern flanks, and amp up the ‘Act East’ policy. In a multipolar world, this elevates India’s global stature.

At home, governance matters in diverse India—communities, regions, and classes demand a strong central government to uphold federalism. States handle law and order, but the Centre leads on internal security, with full cooperation across party lines. The ‘Nation First’ ethos predates Trump’s ‘America First’—Modi embraced it early, handling ties with all nations on merit, prioritizing security and economy.

This blend of global outreach and domestic strength cements India’s rise.
