Solar Power Revolution Hits Bihar: How PM Surya Ghar Yojana is Cutting Bills and Brightening Lives

Imagine slashing your electricity bill to almost zero while going green – that’s the magic of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2024, this solar power scheme is transforming homes across India, especially in places like Bihar’s Bhagalpur. From villages to towns, thousands of families now generate their own clean energy with rooftop solar panels, making life easier and more affordable.

In Bhagalpur, hundreds of households have already installed solar panels and switched to solar energy for daily needs. We caught up with a few beneficiaries who shared their exciting stories.

Dance instructor Mithilesh Kumar couldn’t hide his joy. "I heard about the PM Surya Ghar Yojana and how it makes electricity bills zero – so we jumped in and started producing our own power," he said. "Now, we just pay a small meter charge. With global warming on the rise, these solar panels are a real blessing. Big thanks to PM Modi for this game-changing scheme!"

Chartered Accountant Ambrish Agarwal took it up a notch by installing an 8 KW solar panel system on his roof. It’s powering his home efficiently without the old worries of high bills.

Bank manager Sanjeev Kumar, another happy user of the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, shared how his monthly electricity cost dropped dramatically. "I used to shell out over Rs 10,000 on bills," he explained. "Now, it’s down to just Rs 3,000-4,000. It’s a huge relief!" His bank is even stepping up, helping more people set up solar power in their homes.

Local officials are thrilled with the progress too. Assistant Electrical Engineer Pranav Kumar Mishra revealed that 908 consumers in Bhagalpur’s Sub-Division Mojihadpur have applied for solar connections. Many are already enjoying subsidized solar electricity.

The scheme is spreading fast in nearby areas. In Kahalgaon, 161 people have applied; Naugachia has 49; Nathnagar 65; and Sultanganj 22. Soon, they’ll all benefit from this solar power initiative.

So, how does it work? The government offers a hefty subsidy of up to Rs 78,000 for solar systems from 1 KW to 10 KW. For a 1 KW to 3 KW setup, you’ll need about 100-300 square feet of roof space, and it costs around Rs 2.5 lakh per unit. Banks provide easy financing, and after installation, the subsidy kicks in.

Here’s the best part: If your solar panels produce more electricity than you use, it feeds back into the grid automatically. You get credits on your bill – talk about smart savings!

The PM Surya Ghar Yojana isn’t just about free electricity; it’s empowering families with sustainable solar energy. As more Indians adopt rooftop solar panels in Bihar and beyond, this scheme is lighting up a brighter, greener future for everyone. If you’re thinking of going solar, now’s the time to apply!
