ISI-backed drug smuggler held in Punjab, 50 kg heroin seized

Chandigarh, 22 November – Police authorities in Punjab have nabbed a key drug smuggler, seizing 50 kg of heroin from him, according to Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav on Saturday.

The arrested individual, identified as Sandeep Singh – known as Seepa – hails from Shanna Sher Singh Wala village in Kapurthala. While the haul was discovered, the team also seized the suspect’s white Kia Seltos, the vehicle he used during the operation.

Preliminary findings suggest that the cargo was sent by ISI‑backed smugglers operating from Pakistan. Sixteen criminal cases, five of them under the NDPS Act, already stand against Seepa, underscoring his long‑standing role in organised drug trafficking. He had recently been released from Kapurthala Jail.

Additional investigations are underway to map out the network behind the shipment, with authorities expecting further recoveries.

In a briefing, Additional Director General of Police for ANTF, Nilabh Kishore, explained that the arrest was triggered by precise tech‑intelligence. After the suspect was freed earlier in the month, intelligence indicated he had gathered a large consignment in Baggeke Utar, a border village in Jalalabad.

On the route to Ferozepur, ANTF teams spotted him and, after an initial challenge, he tried to flee. The police pursued him, eventually intercepting him in Rauke village following a brief confrontation in which he attempted to spearhead his vehicle at the police unit.

The operation is now probing who the intended buyers were. A charge has been filed under Section 21 of the NDPS Act at the ANTF police station in Mohali.
