After Dharmendra’s cremation, several top figures from the film industry came to his home to offer their condolences to the grieving family.
Farhan Akhtar, the son of Javed Akhtar—who co‑wrote ’Sholay’ with Salim Khan—arrived with his sister Zoya Akhtar and mother Honey Rani to pay their respects.
Coincidentally, Salim Khan, also a co‑writer of ’Sholay’, celebrated his birthday on the same Monday that Dharmendra departed. He had been seen earlier at the Pawan Hans crematorium in Vile Parle, Mumbai, during the funeral rites.
Other prominent personalities, including actress Kajol, veteran actor Sanjay Khan, his son Zayed Khan, beloved veteran Rekha, actress Shilpa Shetty, and her husband Raj Kundra, were also present at the actor’s residence.
Dharmendra, a pillar of Bollywood’s history, was born in 1935 in Punjab and launched his cinematic career in the early 1960s after winning a national talent search competition.
In the late 1950s Filmfare magazine teamed with Bimal Roy Productions to organize a nationwide casting contest aimed at discovering new faces for Hindi cinema. Dharmendra emerged victorious in 1958, selected for his striking looks and natural charm—an achievement that later set the stage for icons such as Rajesh Khanna.
He quickly became famous for his charismatic presence, emotional depth, and effortless screen presence. His versatility let him dominate romance, action, and comedy alike. Key films of his repertoire include ’Phool Aur Patthar’, which established him as a leading man, and the legendary ’Sholay’, where his portrayal of the witty and beloved Veeru remains iconic.
Dharmendra was honored with the Padma Bhushan, India’s third‑highest civilian award.
