Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is preparing to send a Finnish woman back to her home country, after she was charged with assaulting a mother, her 11‑month‑old child and a Dalmatian during a row in Florida.

Nina Kristina Jaaskelainen, 54, has lived in the United States without authorization since 1999. She was taken into custody in New Smyrna, Fla., this month on battery and domestic‑violence allegations.

A police affidavit says she tossed a cup of coffee at the family’s baby and then again at the mother when a dog that was off‑leash was following them.

Kelly Brisell, the mother, told WESH 2 News that the coffee splashed across her clothes and over her son’s face. “It was over his eyes, nose and temple. Thank God the coffee wasn’t hot,” she said.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office noted that the dog was not on a leash, although it was staying close to the mother and child. Jaaskelainen told officers that the unleashed dog was provoking her own dog, and she insisted that the family and their pet had trespassed on her property.

When police arrived, dried coffee stains were visible on the mother, baby and dog. The affidavit records that Jaaskelainen admitted throwing coffee at the dog but denied targeting the mother and baby intentionally.

Jaaskelainen first entered the country on a tourist visa in April 1999 and was supposed to leave by July of the same year. She stayed, becoming a long‑time undocumented resident—over 25 years now.

ICE placed a detainer on her, meaning she cannot be released back into the U.S. without a court order. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said the detainer guarantees she will not be allowed to enter any future American neighborhood.

“For over two decades, she has been here illegally, evading the law without consequence,” DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said. “Now, a baby, a mother, and a dog have endured her violence.”

The assistant secretary added that she now faces battery and domestic‑violence charges and that ICE’s arrest detainer will prevent her from harming another American family. “The current administration will not allow unlawful aliens to terrorize our citizens,” she concluded.
