2026 T20 World Cup: India to open title defence against USA on February 7

India will kick off the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on 7 February with a clash against the United States in Mumbai, after the ICC revealed the full itinerary for the edition that will be shared by India and Sri Lanka. The opening day will feature a 14‑th‑hour start in Colombo, where Pakistan hosts the Netherlands, followed shortly by a Kolkata showdown between Bangladesh and the West Indies, and the final game of the day under lights in Mumbai.
A deal struck earlier this year means the tournament’s semi‑final and final venues will shift based on whether Pakistan advances, adding a unique administrative wrinkle to the championship. In Group A, India and Pakistan will compete alongside the United States, Namibia, and the Netherlands. While the two cricketing powerhouses are expected to move on with ease, the Americans’ shock win over Pakistan in the previous edition reminds everyone that early complacency can be costly.
India’s key match against Pakistan is slated for 15 February in Colombo, with the remaining group fixtures for the hosts spread across Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, and Ahmedabad.
Group B places Sri Lanka in a demanding mix featuring Australia, Ireland, Zimbabwe, and Oman. Australia’s opener will face Ireland, while Zimbabwe’s return to World‑Cup action kicks off with a marquee game against the hosts.
Group C, which also welcomes first‑time entrants Italy and Nepal, is led by reigning champions England and the West Indies. England will take on the West Indies in Mumbai on 11 February, and Italy’s participation adds a historic touch to the field.
Group D carries the toughest slate, with heavyweight teams Afghanistan, South Africa, and New Zealand (the 2024 semi‑finalists) alongside Canada and the UAE. The spotlight will fall on bone‑cracking encounters such as South Africa versus Afghanistan and New Zealand versus South Africa, both set for Ahmedabad.
The top two from each group will qualify for the Super‑Eight, split into two groups of four. From that stage, the leading two in each pool will advance to the semi‑finals, culminating in the championship match on 8 March, which will crown the 2026 world champions.
