Puducherry Faces Severe Drinking Water Crisis, Says Former CM V. Narayanasamy
Puducherry is grappling with a major drinking water crisis, according to former Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy. He highlighted how unsafe water has led to serious health issues, including two deaths in recent incidents. People in the area are even reporting kidney damage from consuming contaminated supplies.
Talking to reporters on Thursday, Narayanasamy pointed out that the problem has spread across Puducherry. “Drinking water in areas like Urulayanpet, Nellithope, Murungapakkam, and Thattanjavadi isn’t safe at all,” he said. He blamed excessive pumping from the sea, which mixes harmful bacteria like E. coli into the water. This has sparked outbreaks of diseases such as diarrhoea and cholera.
The Congress leader didn’t stop there. He revealed that party members visited spots like Vinoba Nagar, Shakti Nagar, and Pillai Thottam to check the situation firsthand. “In Shakti Nagar alone, two people died after drinking this substandard water,” Narayanasamy added. He slammed the current government for failing to act. “The Chief Minister needs to step up on this water problem. How can we trust a government that can’t even ensure safe drinking water? What’s the Public Works Minister doing? Relying on water cans forever isn’t a solution.”
Narayanasamy also criticized the lack of basic safety measures. “They skip adding chlorine and don’t test the water properly. When opposition voices raise alarms, they just ignore us,” he said.
Recent Rains Bring Some Relief to Tamil Nadu and Puducherry
On a brighter note, heavy rainfall hit parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry recently, easing the humid weather. Between August 31 and September 1, 2025, showers poured down, especially in coastal and northern areas.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported the action focused on north coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and bits of Salem district. It provided much-needed relief in Chennai and nearby spots from the sticky heat.
Puducherry led with a whopping 54 mm of rain, followed by Chennai’s Nungambakkam at 29.2 mm and Salem at 22 mm. While the rains helped, they came unevenly across the region.
