Disturbing bodycam footage shows Iryna Zarutska’s alleged killer saying a ‘man-made material’ is controlling him months before murder

The Charlotte‑Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) released fresh body‑cam footage that shows Decarlos Brown Jr., the man accused of stabbing Iryna Zarutska on a LYNX Blue Line train, telling police speakers that a “man‑made material” had been inserted into his body and was controlling him. The video, which captures a welfare‑check visit in January, begins with Brown dialing 911 on his own, explaining that he had found something inside him that made him feel as if he was being controlled.

At the scene, an officer asked Brown, “You think you got somebody inside controlling you?” But Brown insisted that the material had been placed inside without his “permission or authorization.” He went on to say that it controls all of his bodily functions, including what he eats. He added that he needed police to investigate because medical tests or scans do not exist for what had affected his body.

The footage shows Brown telling officers that he “woke up on the ground” and that “somebody did something to my body.” The incident occurred several months before Brown allegedly killed 23‑year‑old Zarutska on a train in August, an act that authorities have described as unprovoked.

During the almost 30‑minute encounter officers advised Brown to get a medical evaluation at a hospital. While they were still at the scene, Brown made a second 911 call for help. He was swarmed by officers and then arrested on a charge of misusing the 911 system.

Brown said that doctors had once tried to diagnose him with schizophrenia, but that “they got it wrong.” He claimed he was “mentally perfect.”

CMPD officials noted that, because Brown did not express a desire to harm himself or others, officers did not move to an involuntary commitment.

The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction shows that Brown has a long criminal history that includes larceny, burglary and armed robbery convictions. He began a five‑year prison sentence in 2015 but had been released on cashless bail at the time of the murder.
