Newly elected Vice President CP Radhakrishnan is all set to take his oath on Friday at Rashtrapati Bhavan. President Droupadi Murmu will administer the oath at 10:30 a.m., marking his official start as India’s second-highest constitutional office holder.
The ceremony will see top leaders from across parties coming together. Invites have gone out to opposition leaders from both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, along with key figures from the ruling NDA. Even former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar plans to join the event.
Before stepping into this big role, Radhakrishnan quit his position as Maharashtra Governor on Thursday. President Murmu has now named Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat to handle Maharashtra’s duties as well, as per an official update from Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Right after the swearing-in, Vice President Radhakrishnan will meet Rajya Sabha floor leaders at 12:30 p.m. Sources say the meeting got announced late Thursday evening.
Radhakrishnan, the NDA’s pick, won the Vice Presidential election on Tuesday with 452 votes. He beat opposition candidate and ex-Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy, who got 300 votes. The poll happened after Jagdeep Dhankhar stepped down.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was quick to congratulate him on X, praising Radhakrishnan’s dedication to society. “Congratulations to Thiru CP Radhakrishnan Ji on winning the 2025 Vice Presidential election,” PM Modi posted. “His life has always been devoted to serving society and empowering the poor and marginalised. I am confident that he will be an outstanding VP, who will strengthen our Constitutional values and enhance Parliamentary discourse.”
This big day highlights a smooth transition in India’s leadership, with Radhakrishnan bringing his experience from public service to the Rajya Sabha’s top spot.
