Hansal Mehta’s ‘Gandhi’ gets standing ovation at TIFF, Pratik Gandhi overwhelmed

Mumbai, September 12: Actor Pratik Gandhi is on cloud nine after his upcoming series Gandhi wowed audiences at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The show, directed by Hansal Mehta, earned a thunderous standing ovation at its premiere, leaving Pratik feeling overwhelmed and grateful.

Pratik, who steps into the iconic shoes of Mahatma Gandhi, couldn’t hold back his excitement. He jumped on Instagram to share a bunch of photos and clips from the red carpet event. One video even captured the electric moment when the crowd rose to their feet in applause. In his caption, Pratik gushed: "A very special day when #Gandhi premiered at #TIFF50. Grateful and blessed to be here with the amazingly passionate team Gandhi, beautiful audience at TIFF, and overwhelming response with a standing ovation—the joy in the air and that smile on all our faces."

The series Gandhi dives deep into the life of the Father of the Nation, drawing from historian Ramachandra Guha’s books Gandhi Before India and Gandhi: The Years That Changed the World. It stars Pratik alongside Bhamini Oza, Kabir Bedi, and Hollywood’s Tom Felton. Produced by Applause Entertainment, the show will unfold over three seasons. Filming for the first season wrapped up in August 2024, focusing on Gandhi’s early years from 1888 to 1915.

Season one takes viewers on a fascinating journey: from a curious teen in colonial India, to a shy law student in London, and then to his transformative 23 years as a young lawyer in South Africa. It’s a fresh take on Mahatma Gandhi’s life story that promises to captivate fans of Indian history and biopics.

Adding to the buzz, Pratik shared a fun photo with Tom Felton—known for his role as Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter—on September 9. He called Felton his "first friend in England" and teased, "Can’t wait to have you in India!" Felton plays Josiah Oldfield in the series and replied warmly on social media, dubbing Pratik his "brother in arms." He wrote: "To my brother in arms @pratikgandhiofficial—the cast & crew that made this happen—what an honour it was to premiere ‘Gandhi’ at @TIFF_NET to a standing ovation this weekend—@hansalmehta #Gandhi."

Pratik shot back in the comments: "Cheers to my first friend in England, the innocent, emotional and funny @t22felton. Can’t wait to have you in India." The bromance between the two actors has fans excited about this Indo-Hollywood collaboration in the Gandhi series.

With such a stellar premiere response at TIFF, Gandhi is already generating massive hype. Keep an eye out for more updates on this must-watch biographical drama!
