Bhopal – A man accused of raping a six‑year‑old in Raisen district has been taken into custody after a brief “encounter” in Bhopal on Friday. Additional Superintendent of Police Kamlesh Kharpuse said that Salman was seized between 3:30 and 4:00 a.m. while the police were on their way to Gauharganj. A punctured tyre delayed the transport, and the accused tried to escape. While being moved in another vehicle, he attempted to snatch SI Shyam Singh’s gun and fire, prompting the officers to shoot at his leg, which injured him. Salman was immediately admitted to Hamidia Hospital, where a heavy security detail now surrounds the building. Once he has received treatment for the bullet wound, he will return to Raisen.
The arrest comes six days after the shocking incident involving a six‑year‑old victim in the Gauharganj area, which sparked widespread outrage. Authorities extended prohibitory orders on Thursday, and the town had seen violent protests the previous day. The district had already witnessed demonstrations on Tuesday and Wednesday, with local residents and Hindu groups voicing their anger. Police reported that the situation calmed by Thursday.
The following Tuesday, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav convened a high‑level meeting at Police Headquarters, involving the Director General of Police and the Chief Secretary, to discuss the matter and issue necessary directives. In response to the unrest, the Chief Minister transferred SP Vivek Pandey of Raisen. The abused girl, who was victimised on November 21, is now recovering at AIIMS Bhopal. Additionally, State Congress president Jitu Patwari visited the hospital on Wednesday to meet her family.
