‘Worked very hard’: Australian envoy on ensuring safety and welfare of Indian students Down Under

On November 28, at the Australian High Commissioner to India Philip Green’s office in New Delhi, he told LatestNewsX that the Albanese‑led government remains firmly committed to a multicultural Australia and that it has done hard work to safeguard Indian students studying abroad. Green explained that Canberra is pursuing stronger academic links with India and highlighted the numerous scholarship options currently available from Australian universities.

When asked how the safety of Indian students is being ensured, Green replied, “We worked very hard on this. As you may know, Australia is one of the safest countries on Earth, and we are proud of that. We want all visitors to our country, be they Indian or be they from other countries, indeed our own people to be safe and we have a very strong and effective police force, a border force, and a very effective security intelligence agencies. We also want to make sure that Indian visitors to our country feel welcome.” He went on to say that the country’s security infrastructure is robust and that real friendliness is a top priority for Indian travelers.

Earlier this year, “March for Australia” rallies had taken place across major cities and regional centres, with thousands of demonstrators waving banners that demanded an end to what they called “mass migration” into Australia. Green noted that opposition to immigration and multiculturalism is seen in many nations, but highlighted that Australia’s leaders have been unequivocal in their backing of sustainable migration and a society where everyone—from all corners of the world—feels safe, celebrated and integrated.

On the academic front, Green revealed that many Australian universities offer scholarships to Indian students, and announced that the government will now provide around fifteen PhD‑level scholarships focused on STEM subjects. He emphasized that these grants are meant to deepen partnerships and allow leading Indian scholars to study in Australia and elevate their expertise.

In September, the Ministry of External Affairs spokesman Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that India had engaged the Australian government and diaspora groups following the recent anti‑immigrant protests. At a September 5 briefing, Jaiswal explained that the Indian High Commission in Australia had communicated the concerns of its community to the Australian authorities before the demonstrations. The Australian side sent a formal response acknowledging that such protests raise important concerns for Australia’s diverse population.

Jaiswal added that both government and opposition leaders in Australia have publicly defended the nation’s multicultural identity and praised the contributions of the Indian Australian community to the country’s development. He reiterated India’s conviction that diversity is a strength, stressed the importance of people‑to‑people ties within the broader strategic partnership, and underscored India’s commitment to the welfare of Indians overseas while maintaining close contact with Australian officials and diaspora organisations on these matters.
