New York, New Jersey could get up to 5 inches of snow from Nor’Easter next week

A big cold front is headed for the East Coast, and parts of New York and New Jersey could end up with up to five inches of snow next week.

Fox Weather’s team said the storm might bring three to five inches to the Lower Hudson Valley on Tuesday.

The Big Apple could get a quick flurry early Tuesday, but it will likely switch to rain.
City residents should plan on about one to two inches of total precipitation.

In north‑western New Jersey, one to three inches of snow could touch down on Tuesday.

Historically, New York City averages 4.8 inches of December snow, according to NOAA, yet white Christmases are rare. The last time the five boroughs saw snow on Christmas Day was 2009.

In 2024, a two‑inch blanket fell over the city on Christmas Eve – the first white Christmas Eve since 1996.

Across the border, the Garden State normally records 5.4 inches of December snow, per NOAA.

The approaching Nor’Easter follows a major cross‑country storm that knocked out more than 1,800 US flights on Saturday and caused over 7,000 delays, as reported by flight‑tracking site Flight Aware. Chicago O’Hare was hardest hit, with well over 600 cancellations.

On I‑70 near Terre Haute, Indiana, the same storm produced a 45‑car pileup, though no serious injuries or fatalities were reported.

Meanwhile, a polar vortex is set to strike the country next week, sending temperatures below freezing for about 235 million Americans, according to Fox Weather. Montana, North and South Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin could expect the particularly frigid days.
