Kathmandu, Nov 30 (LatestNewsX) — Nepal’s government announced on Sunday that it will donate $200,000 to help Sri Lanka’s flood‑relief and recovery operations after recent downpours have claimed more than 200 lives.
At least 212 people have died and 218 are still missing, according to Sri Lanka’s Disaster Management Centre (DMC).
The Nepali Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it felt profound sorrow and offered its deepest sympathies to both the Sri Lankan government and its citizens for the devastation wrought by the floods.
“In the spirit of close bilateral relations, Nepal stands firmly with Sri Lanka in this difficult time,” the statement read.
“The Government of Nepal offers its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wishes for a swift and complete recovery of the injured.”
Sri Lanka has declared a national emergency and called on the international community for aid, urging its diaspora to contribute funds for the affected communities.
Heavy rains from Cyclone Ditwah have wreaked havoc across several regions, and the DMC warned that more rain is expected in the coming days.
According to the Daily Mirror, river levels have surged to record highs, flooding entire towns, sweeping away major bridges and crumbling critical infrastructure.
International assistance is now beginning to arrive as Sri Lanka grapples with an escalating humanitarian crisis.
The Daily Mirror reports that more than 20,500 army personnel have already been deployed for rescue operations; on Saturday alone, the army rescued about 3,790 people and relocated them to safe centers.
