The northeast United States is on track for the planet’s coldest weather this month, according to alarming new forecasts.
“My thinking is that the cold the first week of December is the appetizer and the main course will be in mid‑December,” said MIT climatologist Judah Cohen when speaking with USA Today.
“The most expansive region of most likely extreme cold on Earth stretches from the Canadian Plains to the U.S. East Coast in the 3rd week of December,” Cohen added, referencing the output from his weather‑modeling computer.
The severe chill will come as the polar vortex pushes lower, pulling Arctic air over the country. While the exact numbers are still uncertain, Cohen expects temperatures to dip below what people are feeling this week.
This week, the Midwest is seeing daytime highs in the low 10s to mid‑20s, while areas from Illinois to Missouri are forecast to register nighttime lows near zero.
