At Monday’s hearing over whether evidence against Luigi Mangione should be suppressed, a jail guard mentioned the name Jeffrey Epstein as part of his testimony. The guard, responsible for keeping a close eye on Mangione while he sat in a Pennsylvania cell in December 2024, explained that the officer had placed the suspect under “constant watch” – a level of monitoring normally reserved for those who might threaten their own safety.
“I was told that SCI Huntington didn’t want an Epstein-style situation,” Pennsylvania Correction Officer Thomas Rivers told the Manhattan court, drawing a link between the lock‑down at the state facility and the high‑profile suicide that occurred in a New York jail in August 2019.
Rivers, who had been assigned to the detention unit where Mangione was held, said he had been kept under tight surveillance while in custody, noting that the “constant watch” is typically used for detainees at risk of self‑harm. Epstein, a once‑powerful financier who was convicted of sex‑trafficking offences, died by suicide while awaiting trial in New York, authorities confirmed.
During an informal conversation with Mangione, the guard recalled the suspect talking about a “gang fight between ‘Lady boys’” and describing a bizarre incident on public transport that involved “something with monkeys on public transport.” According to the officer, Mangione claimed that he had been beaten by a group of seven transgender women during a bar dispute over money — a claim documented in a new book. That altercation took place months before the alleged shooting that killed UnitedHealthcare’s chief executive, Brian Thompson, on a Manhattan sidewalk.
This week’s hearing will focus on whether Mangione was wrongly searched by law enforcement at the time of his arrest, and whether evidence that could be crucial to his case was confiscated illegally.
