Praveen Kumar, India’s star para-athlete and a double Paralympic medallist, is all set to thrill fans at the World Para Athletics Championships right here in New Delhi. The event kicks off from September 27 to October 5 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, and Praveen dreams of grabbing that elusive gold medal to complete his collection.
Competing in the T64 high jump category, Praveen has an incredible story of grit and glory. He first made waves with a silver at the 2019 Junior World Championships. Then came another silver at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. He didn’t stop there—snagging gold at the Asian Para Games and bronze at the 2023 World Para Athletics Championships. His latest triumph? A breathtaking gold at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, where he smashed the Asian record with a personal best jump of 2.08m.
Now, with the home crowd cheering him on at the Indian Oil New Delhi 2025 World Para Athletics Championships, Praveen is ready to leap even higher. “Performing in front of my own people will feel amazing,” he shared. “I’ve trained non-stop with total discipline, tweaking every jump alongside my coach. Switching training spots was tough—bouncing between Thyagaraj Complex and Vinod Nagar Sports Complex while they fixed the main track at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. But it made me tougher and more adaptable. The fresh Mondo track there has me feeling quicker and stronger. With fans’ energy, I’ll push my limits sky-high!”
This championships marks India’s grandest para sports spectacle yet, drawing over 2,200 athletes and staff from more than 104 countries. They’ll battle it out in 186 medal events, and it’s a big deal as a qualifier for the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympics. For Praveen and the whole Indian para athletics team, it’s a golden chance to shine on the global stage.
