PM Modi’s Northeast Tour: Boosting Connectivity and Development in Mizoram, Manipur, and Assam

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set for an exciting two-day visit to the Northeast starting Saturday. He’ll kick off development projects, launch new trains, and connect with locals in Mizoram, Manipur, and Assam. This trip comes at a crucial time, focusing on infrastructure, rail connectivity, and cultural celebrations amid ongoing efforts to bring peace to the region.

Starting Strong in Mizoram: New Rail Links for Aizawl

PM Modi lands first in Aizawl, Mizoram’s capital, to inaugurate the 51.38-km Bairabi-Sairang railway project. This makes Aizawl the fourth Northeast capital connected by rail, joining Guwahati, Agartala, and Itanagar. It’s a big win for Mizoram railway development, improving travel and boosting the local economy.

Joining him are central ministers, and he’ll flag off three new train services linking Aizawl to major cities. These include the weekly Sairang-Anand Vihar (Delhi) Rajdhani Express, the tri-weekly Kolkata-Sairang-Kolkata Express, and the daily Guwahati-Sairang-Guwahati Express. After the launches, PM Modi will speak at public gatherings, sharing updates on Northeast growth.

First Trip to Manipur Since 2023 Violence: Projects and Peace Talks

From Aizawl, the Prime Minister heads to Manipur—his first visit since the ethnic clashes between Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities erupted in May 2023. Security is tight across Imphal East, Imphal West, Churachandpur, Bishnupur, and nearby districts to ensure a smooth trip.

In Churachandpur, a Kuki-Zo majority area, PM Modi will lay foundation stones for projects worth Rs 7,300 crore at Peace Ground. He’ll also address a public meeting there. Later, in Imphal at the historic Kangla Fort, he’ll inaugurate infrastructure works valued at Rs 1,200 crore. Overall, these Manipur development projects total Rs 8,500 crore, covering roads, health, and more to support the state’s recovery.

Expect PM Modi to meet local MLAs, leaders, and civil society groups in both spots. Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla has already chatted with Kuki-Zo MLAs in Churachandpur about the visit. He also met BJP leaders from Imphal Valley, including ex-Chief Minister N. Biren Singh and state BJP chief Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi. Top officials like Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel and DGP Rajiv Singh joined those discussions.

On the security front, Lieutenant General Abhijit S. Pendharkar of the Spear Corps visited Churachandpur and other districts. He checked the situation along the India-Myanmar border, force readiness, and coordinated with the Indian Army, Assam Rifles, BSF, CRPF, and Manipur Police. This comes as Manipur remains under President’s Rule since February 13, after Biren Singh’s resignation. The 60-member assembly is suspended until 2027, with ethnic violence still a challenge.

Wrapping Up in Assam: Cultural Tribute and Massive Projects

After Manipur, PM Modi moves to Guwahati for September 13-14. The visit highlights the birth centenary of Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika, Assam’s beloved cultural icon. He’ll launch the official celebrations on Saturday, honoring Hazarika’s legacy in music and arts.

On Sunday, get ready for big reveals: projects worth over Rs 19,000 crore across Assam. In Darrang district, he’ll lay the foundation for Darrang Medical College, plus a nursing college and GNM school—total investment Rs 567 crore to strengthen healthcare.

Infrastructure gets a boost too. PM Modi will start work on the Narengi-Kuruwa bridge and Guwahati Ring Road project, linking Kamrup and Darrang in Assam with Ri Bhoi in Meghalaya. This Rs 7,000 crore initiative will ease traffic and connect communities better.

Finally, he’ll head to Numaligarh refinery in Golaghat district. There, he’ll inaugurate a Rs 5,000 crore bamboo-based ethanol plant and lay the stone for a Rs 7,000 crore Petro Fluidised Catalytic Cracker Unit. These Assam refinery projects push green energy and industrial growth in the Northeast.

PM Modi’s tour promises real progress for the Northeast, from better rail links and healthcare to cultural nods and security focus. Stay tuned as these initiatives unfold!
